Dhruva Space Secures €5 Million Contract with Safran for SBS-3
French aerospace leader Safran Space partners with Indian startup Dhruva Space to enhance India's satellite surveillance capabilities.

In a significant development for India's space capabilities, French aerospace giant Safran Space has entered into contracts exceeding €5 million with the Indian startup Dhruva Space. This partnership, confirmed during the International Space Summit in Paris, aims to supply essential systems, including optical payloads, for satellites under the Space-Based Surveillance-3 (SBS-3) program.
The SBS-3 initiative, which has received approval from the Cabinet Committee on Security, is designed to deploy a constellation of 52 satellites in low Earth and geostationary orbits. These satellites will provide the Indian armed forces with continuous surveillance, secure communication, and enhanced situational awareness across critical land and maritime areas. Notably, the project marks a pivotal expansion of the private sector's involvement in India's strategic space endeavors, with 31 of the satellites being constructed by private firms, while the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will handle the remaining 21.
As part of the contract, Dhruva Space will develop eight satellites, contributing to the private sector's share of the SBS-3 constellation. The inclusion of advanced French technologies from Safran is expected to significantly bolster the capabilities of these satellites and their associated ground infrastructure. Safran has emphasized that this collaboration highlights the emergence of the Indian New Space sector and showcases the French industry's commitment to supporting India's sovereign space capabilities.
The implications of the SBS-3 program extend beyond mere satellite deployment; it is anticipated to enhance India's surveillance frequency and strengthen its monitoring capabilities along its borders and in the Indian Ocean Region. Furthermore, the partnership with Safran may pave the way for additional collaborations in future phases of the SBS initiative, fostering a deeper India-France space relationship.
In addition to the Safran-Dhruva agreement, the Paris summit also saw announcements of other collaborations, including a deal between French launch-services provider RIDE! and Indian company TakeMeToSpace for satellite launches. Another agreement was signed between French Earth-observation firm U-Space and Indian company Axiscades to explore the microsatellite market in India. These developments underscore the expanding cooperation between India and France in the realm of space technology, with Indian private enterprises playing a central role in this evolving landscape.
