In a pressing appeal to the Maharashtra government, BJP leaders from Latur have requested an official drought declaration for the district and surrounding areas in Marathwada. This call comes in light of alarming crop failures and dwindling water resources, which they argue could exacerbate the already dire situation for rural communities.
The situation in Latur has been deteriorating due to insufficient rainfall, which has severely impacted key crops such as soybean and sugarcane. Latur Rural MLA Ramesh Karad submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, emphasizing the urgent need for drought relief and support for farmers who are facing substantial losses after a prolonged dry spell. Former MLA Shivajirao Patil Kavhekar echoed these sentiments, highlighting the financial distress caused by pending crop insurance payments and inadequate water supply projects.
Karad pointed out that farmers have heavily invested in their crops, incurring costs for seeds, fertilizers, and labor. With the kharif harvest critical for repaying loans and sustaining households, the lack of rain poses a significant threat to their livelihoods. He noted that the situation extends beyond crop losses, affecting the rural economy as a whole, with water sources like rivers and wells drying up, further complicating access to drinking water for both people and livestock.
In a recent statement, Kavhekar detailed the adverse effects of delayed rainfall on various crops, including tur, moong, urad, and jowar, which are facing stunted growth. He raised concerns about the pending crop insurance compensation for the 2025 kharif season, with many farmers in Latur still awaiting payments. He urged the government to expedite coordination with insurance companies to ensure timely compensation.
As the crisis deepens, Kavhekar also addressed the urgent need for improved water supply infrastructure in Latur city. He criticized the slow progress of ongoing projects, such as the long-delayed pipeline from Ujani dam to Manjara dam, and called for prioritizing these initiatives to secure a reliable water supply. Additionally, he proposed the installation of water meters on household connections to enhance resource management and prevent wastage, emphasizing the critical nature of the current water scarcity issue.
