Nagpur University Faces Challenges in Digitizing Historical Exam Records

Nagpur University is currently grappling with the challenge of digitizing its historical examination records, despite having transitioned its examination system online. During a recent Senate meeting, concerns were raised regarding the absence of a digital repository for the university's extensive archive of past examination data, which remains largely un-digitized.
Senate member Adv Manmohan Bajpai highlighted the distinction between current online examination processes and the need to digitize historical records. He inquired about the existence of a dedicated data center for the examination section, to which the administration confirmed that no such facility exists. Instead, examination data is stored on servers managed by the university's IT Cell, raising concerns about data accessibility and preservation.
In response to these issues, university officials have begun discussions with two companies to explore options for digitizing and securely storing old examination records. The Senate has also recommended that the university establish an in-house system for managing examination data, reducing reliance on external vendors. This recommendation aims to enhance the university's control over its data management processes.
In a related development, the university's management council has approved the creation of a non-profit IT company under Section 8, which will focus on developing software and technology solutions tailored to the university's specific needs. This initiative is intended to minimize dependence on private vendors and empower the university to manage its digital systems more effectively. Currently, the university utilizes approximately 15 different software applications for its academic and administrative functions.
Looking ahead, a week-long evaluation exercise with software companies is scheduled to take place around September 15-16. This initiative aims to assess various software systems and identify features that can be integrated into the new IT company’s offerings. Additionally, the university plans to acquire source codes for software developed for its operations, allowing for internal modifications and upgrades, thereby increasing its technological autonomy.
