Major Restoration Project to Revitalize Illinois Wetlands
A transformative five-year initiative aims to restore 421 acres of ecosystems in Antioch, Illinois, enhancing stormwater management and wildlife habitats.

Visitors will still have access to Raven Glen during the restoration work.
A significant restoration project is set to commence at Raven Glen Forest Preserve in Antioch, Illinois, aimed at revitalizing 421 acres of wetlands, prairies, and woodlands. This ambitious five-year endeavor, spearheaded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Chicago District in collaboration with the Lake County Forest Preserves, seeks to reshape the landscape to better manage stormwater and enhance the health of the surrounding watershed. Work is anticipated to begin this fall or winter, focusing on the land east of Savage Road and west of Route 45.
Historically, the area has a rich agricultural background, functioning as a dairy farm until the late 1990s. During its peak in the 1950s and 1960s, the farmstead was considered state-of-the-art. However, agricultural practices have disrupted the natural water flow, necessitating restoration efforts. The project will involve disabling drainage tiles, reshaping land sections, and reconnecting Hastings Creek with its floodplain, thereby reversing many of the alterations made for farming.
The restoration aims to create a natural defense against flooding by allowing the wetlands and floodplain to retain stormwater for extended periods, which could alleviate pressure on downstream areas and improve water quality in the Upper Des Plaines River Watershed. Additionally, invasive vegetation will be removed, and native seeds and seedlings will be introduced to rebuild diverse habitats, including marshes, meadows, prairies, and woodlands.
Covering 604 acres, Raven Glen is characterized by its rolling terrain and oak-hickory groves. Its connection to the adjacent Ethel's Woods Forest Preserve enhances the protected wildlife landscape. The restoration efforts are expected to strengthen this ecosystem, providing better conditions for wildlife while improving the area’s capacity to manage water effectively.
Despite the extensive work planned, the preserve will remain accessible to visitors. While the trails are expected to stay open, there may be brief temporary closures for safety. This project not only aims to restore the land’s natural capabilities but also to enhance resilience for both wildlife and the community, transitioning the landscape back to its natural state.
