The Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo is escalating, as the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) reported a rapid spread beyond its initial epicenter in Ituri province. This alarming development was highlighted during a briefing on Thursday, where officials noted that while Ituri has seen a decline in new cases, neighboring regions like North Kivu and Haut-Uele are experiencing a surge.
As of the latest government update, a total of 6,843 Ebola cases have been confirmed, resulting in 3,310 deaths. Ituri province remains the most affected area, accounting for over 5,400 cases, while North Kivu has reported more than 1,000 cases since the outbreak was declared in May. The deteriorating situation is exacerbated by ongoing insecurity, population displacements, and a strike by health workers, all of which hinder effective response measures.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed grave concerns, stating that the outbreak is currently out of control and could surpass the devastating 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak in West Africa, which claimed over 11,000 lives. Recent data indicates that new cases in North Kivu have more than doubled, rising from 165 to 381 in just three weeks. The virus has also reached additional health zones in North Kivu, where clashes between government forces and M23 rebels complicate the response efforts.
In response to the escalating crisis, Congo has initiated vaccination campaigns targeting health workers and frontline responders using the Ervebo vaccine, which has proven effective in previous outbreaks. Vaccination efforts are set to expand into Ituri province next week, although the campaign faces significant challenges due to a limited supply of doses. So far, Congo has received only 70,000 doses, which raises concerns about the ability to effectively control the outbreak.
Looking ahead, health officials are focused on ramping up vaccination efforts and improving conditions in displacement sites, where many individuals are living in precarious situations. The situation remains fluid, and continued monitoring and support from international health organizations will be crucial in managing this public health emergency.
